After years of false hopes and fake news, the drama adaptation of popular RPG The Legend of Sword and Fairy 4 or much better known as Chinese Paladin 4 (仙剑奇侠传4) is finally in the works. An official poster was even released to mark the start of production. The fantasy drama will be jointly produced by iQiyi, Shanghai New Culture Media Group and New Media. No names are attached to the project with a 2021-2022 release date as of now.
If you are not familiar with Chinese Paladin 1 (仙剑奇侠传1) and Chinese Paladin 3 (仙剑奇侠传3), I suggest you start watching them now. The CGI might not be as good or as flashy as they are now but I dare say that these two fantasy dramas are what got me started with the whole xianxia genre. So in my book, if you are a xianxia fan you must watch these dramas. Both CP1 and CP3 which came out in 2005 and 2008 respectively were headlined by Hu Ge.
CP1 also starred Liu Yifei, Ady An and Eddie Peng while CP3 brought together Yang Mi, Tang Yan, Liu Shi Shi and Wallace Huo.
Chinese Paladin 5 (仙剑云之凡) was also adapted in 2016 with Han Dongjun, Nazha, Joseph Zheng and Jin Chen in starring roles. But personally I found it quite forgettable and a bit of a letdown. So, I am not super excited about this CP4 adaptation, I’m still hoping that it gets the right cast and the right treatment which will both please the game fans and the drama fans alike.
